Principle of Residual Current Circuit Breaker and its Advantages

We all are aware that electricity has become an indispensable component of our lives but the main fact is it comes with its hazards to human life and property. Electrocution and fire being are the two major risks closely related to electricity. When it comes to the protection of electrical circuits the RCCB Residual Current Circuit Breaker is an important safety measure. It is a current sensing device, which automatically measures and disconnects the circuit whenever there is a fault that occurs in the connected circuit or the current exceeds the rated sensitivity.

RCCB is particularly helpful in instances of sudden earth fault that aims at protecting an individual from the risk of electric shocks as well as electrocution and fires. The presence of RCCB makes sure that in such types of cases, the circuit trips immediately and the person gets protected from an electric shock.

Principle behind RCCB

On the principle of Kirchhoff’s law, Hager Residual Current Circuit Breaker generally works, which says that in a circuit the incoming current must be equal to the outgoing current. Thus, RCCB compares the difference in current values between live and neutral wires. Ideally, the current that flows to the circuit from the live wire needs to be the same as that flowing through the neutral wire. In case there is a fault, the current from the neutral wire gets reduced and the differential between the two is known as Residual Current. The RCCB is triggered to trip off the circuit when there is a spotting of a Residual Current.

One thing that ensures that the reliability of RCCB is tested is when a test circuit is included with the Residual Current Device. The current starts to flow through the test circuit when the test button is pushed. On the neutral coil of the device there occurs an imbalance. So the RCCB trips and supply is disconnected which then checks the reliability of RCCBs.

Advantages of RCCB

  • Protects against voltage fluctuation as it includes a filtering device that guards against transient voltage levels
  • When the rated sensitivity is exceeded, it automatically disconnects the circuit
  • Both cable and busbar connections is offers the possibility of dual termination
  • Against earth fault as well as any leakage current ELCB Residual Current Circuit Breaker
  • Provides protection
